town of Zalaegerszeg

Welcome to Zalaegerszeg, the Zala county seat, the capital of the ‘szegs’, the gateway to the Göcsej region.
Nestling amongst the rolling hills, you’ll discover its natural treasures, gastronomic delights, rich folk traditions and colourful events.

Zalaegerszeg is a city hidden in the Zala river valley in the West-Transdanubian region, in the north-eastern part of the Göcsej hills. Hikers, cyclists and horse riders are attracted to the neighbouring forests and the opportunity to experience the unique beauty and charm of the Zala valley’s unspoiled landscape. Hikers of all levels can ramble along the enticing routes to the Arboretum in Csács and in the south, the forest Alsóerdő where the Azalea Valley thrives in its own microclimate. On the Bazita Hill you will have an exceptional panorama from the top of the TV observation tower.

Here in Zalaegerszeg we are fortunate to be in a natural thermal water rich region allowing us to offer our ‘health tourists’ a range of services. These include the exciting Aquacity Waterslide and Adventure Park and the relaxing Indoor Thermal Spa featuring sound and light therapy. For keeping fit or just for fun, sports lovers can participate in their favourite sports in a number of city locations.

Portraying the past and present of our cultural heritage in several permanent and temporary exhibitions, the Göcseji Museum, the Göcseji Village Museum and the Museum of the Hungarian Petroleum Industry shouldn’t be missed. Anyone with a keen interest can learn about and try their hands at traditional folk trades such as pottery and woodcarving at the House of Craftsmen located on the shore of Lake Gébárti.

For a bit of culture, we are spoiled for choice in a selection of programs at the city’s Concert and Exhibition Hall, the Sándor Hevesi Theatre or under the stars in the summer at the Quarterhouse open-air theatre.

Sampling the gastronomic delights of our region is easy too. Whether you are a “gastrotourist” or just a hungry visitor you will find something close to your heart in the town. Local specialities are proudly on our menus not only in the restaurants but also in the covered market, the Vásárcsarnok. Festivals are scented with a tasty selection of products to try. Look for the Egerszeg Festival, ‘Pálinka and Mangalica’ May Day, Downtown Grape Harvest and Zala Specialities Festival.

There is no end to the variety of activities and events so don’t delay, come and enjoy a warm and hearty welcome in Zalaegerszeg.
